THE HISTORY OF SONOS
Sonos was founded in 2002 by Californian John MacFarlane. From the offset, he was claiming that the Sonos goal was ‘to reinvent home audio for the digital age’.
12 years on and it is very difficult to deny that Sonos have achieved their goal. Sonos is a huge name in the audio world, and beyond. Their wireless and multiroom systems have revolutionised the hi-fi industry and has forced many manufacturers to play catch-up when it comes to streaming and multi-room hi-fi.
Sonos sits nicely between being categorised as a tech and a hifi company. The fact is that they have been able to merge the two ideas and bring hi-fi quality sound to the tech world and bring easily accessible and useable music/technology to the hi-fi world.
Mr. MacFarlane finds the idea of combining your new digital formats with classic hi-fi sound to be the centre of the business. ‘the idea of hi-fi itself – you want to play it because it sounds great! Spotify, podcasts, iTunes: these are the new formats, but the point is to have products you love, which integrate all these things and still deliver a genuinely great experience’.
